Thank you to RT Teen Day, I’m thrilled to share an interview with one of this year’s YA authors, Kiera Cass!
Because we authors don’t often get to sit with our readers while eating sliders or hopping into photo booths! It’s just so much fun for us to spend time with readers, and I look forward to it every year.
Who doesn’t love a good romance? Whether it’s the driving force of the story or snuck off to the side, I’m always up for it! What appeals to you about including romance in your stories?
I like impossible romances. When you’re just sitting there thinking there’s no way this can actually work out… and then (hopefully) it does.
One could argue I’m super into love triangles, but mostly it’s love with tension. Again, things that seem totally impossible.
Who are some of your all time favorite fictional couples? Books, movies, comics… whatever!
Favorite ships forever: Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask (Sailor Moon), Arnold and Helga (Hey Arnold!), Neville and Luna (Harry Potter… even though it’s not exactly canon), and of course Edward and Bella (Twilight).
What’s you’re favorite part of being an author of young adult books?
The honesty and hope that young people have is easy to get swept up into. You’re on the edge of so many great things, and I think you’re more likely to fight for what you want and pursue things with passion. Some people lose that as they age. But one of the great things for me is, even on days when that feels low, everything I’m working on still has that voice, so you kind of get a burst of it for yourself when your character is going through it. Total perk.
If you could spend a day inside the world of any book, which would you choose and why?
Harold and the Purple Crayon. One, purple. Two, it’d be nice to draw myself a hammock or a snack at any given time.
What have you been reading or recommending lately?
I’ve mostly been reading for research, so nothing fun to recommend at the moment. But if there’s something that you’re kind of curious about, go get an actual, physical book. There’s something great about being able to hold that information in your hand.
The Crown by Kiera Cass:
When Eadlyn became the first princess of Illéa to hold her own Selection, she didn’t think she would fall in love with any of her thirty-five suitors. She spent the first few weeks of the competition counting down the days until she could send them all home. But as events at the palace force Eadlyn even further into the spotlight, she realizes that she might not be content remaining alone.
Eadlyn still isn’t sure she’ll find the fairytale ending her parents did twenty years ago. But sometimes the heart has a way of surprising you…and soon Eadlyn must make a choice that feels more impossible—and more important—than she ever imagined.
