In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.
Esta is a talented thief, and she's been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta's training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.
But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.
Welcome to week two of The Last Magician’s Scavenger Tour! This week we get to meet some of the characters from the story. We’re so luck to have none other than Harte Darrigan on the blog today.
But first, don’t forget you can still join the Devil’s Own Street Team, a group of readers who will compete with one another to win exclusive swag and prizes as we spread the word about THE LAST MAGICIAN?
If you’re interested in being contacted in April, fill out this FORM!
And now, oh my, hello Harte!
Let’s learn a little more about him, shall we?
My earliest beginnings aren’t important. All you need to know about me is the life I’ve made for myself now, and the life I’ve made is one that I’m damn proud of. I make my home in New York City, and you can find me demonstrating my many talents eight times a week at Wallack’s Theatre on Broadway. If you’re lucky, I might even pull you up on stage and give you a more… personal demonstration.
That moment of silence right after I finish an effect, when I don’t yet know whether the crowd will applaud or turn on me, and then…a moment later, when they’re on their feet. For me. For the thrill I gave them. A hot bath in my own porcelain tub. Those rare spring days when the sky is blue and the air is warm, but the shit in the street hasn’t begun to thaw. Crisply pressed cuffs and a well-cut jacket. The sharp sweetness of an orange.
Dirt and grime. This rat-trap of a city. Dolph Saunders, Paul Kelly, and all of the the bosses in the Bowery that trap people by using their own desperation against them. Entanglements of any kind.
I’m a magician, and I have a flair for getting out of tight situations. Am I Mageus?…Who says I’d tell you even if I were?
Liars make the best magicians.
