Stop the Magician.
Steal the book.
Save the future.

In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she's been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta's training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

We have had so much fun over the last three weeks participating in Lisa Maxwell’s The Last Magician Blog Tour and Scavenger Hunt! Many thanks to Lisa, Simon Pulse and Rockstar Book Tours for making this such a fun tour.

About the Order

The Order of Ortus Aurea (Golden Dawn) is a secretive society of the City’s most important and richest men who are committed to the study and mastery of the occult sciences. They believe first and foremost in the power of science and the Enlightenment, and they believe that through careful study, they can master the same powers as the Mageus.

The Order sees Mageus as a danger and sees their magic as feral and uncontrolled. They believe this Old Magic poses a threat to the country, which was built not on superstition and emotion, but on the tenants of the Enlightenment and on the pure science of logic and reason. The Order sees the influx of new immigrants as a threat, because these immigrants might be hiding Mageus among their numbers.

To protect the City and the entire nation, the Order created the Brink, an invisible barrier around the island of Manhattan that acts as a holding cell for magical immigrants. Trapping the Mageus in the City, the Order is able to keep the threat of the Mageus’s power under control.

The Order believes in elemental magic. They study and practice alchemy, theurgy, astronomy, and the hermetic sciences. Khafre Hall is their headquarters. The building contains a vault-like room called the Mysterium, where the Order keeps its most important artifacts, including an ancient book that holds the secret to their power. The Order’s members do not hide their membership, and instead claim that their work keeps the city safe. However, membership is limited to those with the “correct” backgrounds, specifically those with old money. The right kind of wealth.
