Disruptor Blog Tour: Character Interviews

About The SEEKER Series by Arwen Elys Dayton

In the Seeker series, a teenage girl called Quin has spent most of her life training for what she believes is a noble purpose, only to discover that her family is turning her into an assassin instead.

“Fans of Veronica Roth’s Divergent, Marie Lu’s Legend, and Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games series: your next obsession has arrived.” -School Library Journal

Quin has grown up in the remote Scotland Highlands, where she and two boys her age—one her oldest friend, and one her boyfriend—have spent years preparing to inherit two ancient artifacts, which have been handed down in their families for hundreds of years.

These artifacts allow them to do astonishing things, including appearing and disappearing from anywhere in the world. Quin expects to inherit this power for noble purposes, but her father intends to use her as an assassin, plain and simple.

“Both past and present choices shook me to the core, and the final pages left me trembling . . . and then internally cursing that I’ll have to wait until 2017 for a final resolution!” -Fanboy Comics

The story is set in the near future, in a world where the hooded cloaks of Seekers and ancient Scottish ruins live comfortably next to futuristic airships and advanced medical techniques. It’s into this world that we watch Quin try to escape when she discovers the fate that’s waiting for her. And it is in this world that Quin is followed, helped, betrayed and abandoned by those she trusted the most.

We are super excited that Random House invited us to be part of the blog tour for DISRUPTOR, the third and final book in the Seeker trilogy by Arwen Elys Dayton. If you haven’t read Seeker or Traveler, you’re totally missing out on a crazy around the world adventure where the truth you thought you knew may not really be the truth. I’ve totally enjoyed this series so far and I’m excited to see how it ends (also excited to see what crazy fight scenes there are this time!). To celebrate the release of DISRUPTOR we have a fun character interview with Quin, John & the Young Dread!

For you, what is the most important part of being a Seeker?
When I was a little girl, Shinobu’s father used to tell us stories in the evening, stories about Seekers who defeated tyrant kings, Seekers who freed slaves, Seekers who snuck into fortresses and rescued children. These were like fairytales, but they were real. They were the history of our distant ancestors, who really did those things. I grew up believing that I would be a Seeker in the same way they were Seekers. This was the great lie of my life, because my father had made it a lie. But if there’s a chance I can change things back to the way they once were, I have to try.

If you get to find a new normal at the end of everything, where do you want to settle down and start over?
The wilds of Scotland will always feel like my true home. The idea that I might one day go back there, safely, happily, feels too good to be true. But if I could, that’s where I would go.

Is this mission to avenge your family worth hurting Quin & Shinobu?
I didn’t choose to be the enemy. That was thrust upon me by the actions their fathers took against my mother. All I’m doing is getting back what rightfully belonged to her and to my family. I’m only trying to purpose, the meaning that was stolen from us. Do I still have feelings for Quin? Do I wish she could see reason and help me, instead of making everything so difficult? There’s no point in answering that, because I can’t change the way things are.

What do you see as the future of Seekers?
There are only two options. I restore my family, the house of the fox, to its rightful place, or I die trying. What happens to other Seeker families can’t be my concern. Everything else is background noise.

Young Dread:

What do you see as the future of Seekers?
When my master, the Old Dread, was awake and full of determination, he kept Seekers on the true path. He made sure that the families using athames were doing so to improve the world. There was order and hope. There will be no future for Seekers unless I can turn them back toward that noble calling.

If you could stop being a Dread, what would you want to do?
In truth, I can hardly remember life before I became a Dread. So many hundreds of years have passed, and my memories are all of small and uninspired daily routine. I knew so little about the world, I had seen such a narrow piece of existence. I do not think I could return to such a life. I am meant to be a Dread, until I am as old as my master, even if that means I will continue on for a thousand years more.
