At the recent NY ComicCon, PageTurnersBlog had the opportunity to sit down and chat with award winning author, Naomi Novik. During our brief conversation, we talked about The Temeraire Series of books, and the journey of writing a series of books since 2006. We covered her newest work, Uprooted and League of Dragons, the final Temeraire novel.
When you meet Naomi, it is always a treat. Highly energetic, personable, warm and lively, but also very down to earth and engaging. Naomi has received many awards for her writing. She is humbled by her accolades. When asked, she specifically mentioned winning the Nebula Award, as that was awarded by other writing peers. We discussed her newest novel, Spining Silver, which is part of an anthology of books retelling fairy tales. Naomi was chosen to write about Rumpelstiltskin. One of her most recent books, Uprooted, has been awarded the Nebula, Winner of the 2016 Nebula Award for Best Novel, was the winner of the 2016 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel, and the Winner of the 2016 British Fantasy Society Award for Best Novel.
Naomi began her writing career in fanfiction. When asked for advice she’d give to her younger self, and what she has learned about herself, she was very honest. She relayed that she has learned that you should expect your writing pace to change, which with some chagrin she smiled at stating. The advice she’d give herself or any young author, centered on being conservative on what you can accomplish. Learn to estimate and allocate time. She, herself, taught herself to finish what you start. Control what you can control when and what you are writing.
Naomi herself is an avid reader, and was reading American historian and author Barbara Tuchman when I asked what was her current read.
Naomi was gracious enough prior to her public signing to sign a hard copy of League of Dragons for PageTurnersBlog to giveaway to you! One lucky winner will win the signed copy (pictured right). US addresses only, all of our other standard rules apply.
