I’ve become an expert at avoiding things that could hurt me—which means I will figure out how to stay away from Marco Leone.
Seventeen-year-old Frankie Devereux would do anything to forget the past. Haunted by the memory of her boyfriend’s death, she lives her life by one dangerous rule: Nothing matters. At least, that’s what Frankie tells herself after a reckless mistake forces her to leave her privileged life in the Heights to move in with her dad—an undercover cop. She transfers to a public high school in the Downs, where fistfights don’t faze anyone and illegal street racing is more popular than football.
Marco Leone is the fastest street racer in the Downs. Tough, sexy, and hypnotic, he makes it impossible for Frankie to ignore him—and how he makes her feel. But the risks Marco takes for his family could have devastating consequences for them both. When Frankie discovers his secret, she has to make a choice. Will she let the pain of the past determine her future? Or will she risk what little she has left to follow her heart?
The Lovely Reckless is the type of contemporary that I LOVE! It’s gritty and full of meaning and packed with kissing and non-relationship action. Fans of Katie McGarry will be adding Kami Garcia to their must read contemporary author list.
The Lovely Reckless follow a guy from the wrong side of town, and a girl who’s fallen from grace and has has been forced to leave her private school and live with her dad and now attend public school. But that’s not the whole story. Frankie is the only person who knows who killed her boyfriend, but she can’t remember, she’s blocked it out. This one moment has changed her life in so many ways, and it’s changed how she deals with the world. Marco is a good kid, just trying to keep everything together for himself and his sister under some not ideal situations. When Frankie and Marco build a friendship that grows into something more, the relationship will forever change them both.
To be honest, I read this back in the spring, and I remember there being a few little issues with the story, but they didn’t stick with me. So they must not have been that bad, and all I remember is the epicness. This story if full of heart, street racing, kissing and everything that makes for a great story. This is a world that Kami knows well and that familiarity shines through from start to finish.
I love all of Kami’s books, but I hope she writes more contemporary. She always shines, but there’s never enough gritty contemporary stories for me.
