When Lionsgate announced the double feature of Mockingjay parts 1 and 2 I knew that’s how I’d see Mockingjay Part 2 on the big screen. I was excited to see them back to back as if they were one movie (well as close as you can get with the credits and the small break between movies). And I’m so glad I got to experience this.
Mockingjay Part 2 picks up pretty much where part one leaves off with Katniss in the hospital healing from Peeta’s attack. The movie then follows the last half of the book almost to a “t.” It was perfect! Oddly, my only issue was I wanted more surprise, I knew everything that was coming because it did say so close to the book. (Yeah, I know, I can’t have it both ways lol.) But it was truly the perfect end to the series and tribute to the books. I think it really brought the messages that Suzanne Collins (read her thank you letter to the whole Hunger Games Family) was trying to present in the books to life on screen. It was really poignant to me given the resent circumstances as well.
I also found myself hoping that things would end different for characters. I was going well maybe this time he’ll make it up the ladder. It was just as hard to watch the deaths this time around as it was reading them the first time around. And I also got everything I was hoping to see come to life (see list here), maybe not in the way I was expecting, but in an even more perfect way. My favorite scene is with Katniss and Peeta sitting in a window seat, PERFECT!
All in all, it’s a great end. It’s a great movie. It’s a great story. It’s full of action and emotion and everything that had me balling at the end of the book. Thank you to Lionsgate and the whole Hunger Games Team for bringing these books to life in a meaningful and appropriate way. As a fandom, we may not have always liked the changes or understood why choices were made, but seeing the 4 movies one long story, I get it. You have stayed true to the characters and Suzanne’s message, themes and story and I will be forever grateful for that. As this chapter ends I know we’re all looking forward to see whats next and I for one will be along for that ride.
