Three plantations. Two wishes. One ancient curse.
When loss is all you know, how do you find true love?
All her life, Barrie Watson has been a virtual prisoner in the house where she lived with her shut-in mother. When her mother dies, Barrie promises to put some mileage on her stiletto heels. But she finds a new kind of prison at her aunt’s South Carolina plantation instead—a prison guarded by an ancient spirit who long ago cursed one of the three founding families of Watson Island and gave the others magical gifts that became compulsions.
Stuck with the ghosts of a generations-old feud and hunted by forces she cannot see, Barrie must find a way to break free of the family legacy. With the help of sun-kissed Eight Beaufort, who knows what Barrie wants before she knows herself, the last Watson heir starts to unravel her family’s twisted secrets. What she finds is dangerous: a love she never expected, a river that turns to fire at midnight, a gorgeous cousin who isn’t what she seems, and very real enemies who want both Eight and Barrie dead.

Interview with Barrie Watson, the main character from COMPULSION
A. First, I want people to know that being different isn’t always a bad thing. Does that sound defensive? Sorry. But I’m tired of being meek. And I guess that’s the second thing. As for the third thing, I’ll only share that if you can keep a secret—I’m planning on convincing Eight Beaufort he needs to stay on Watson Island. He doesn’t know it yet, but after all the sadness and loss, I’m determined to make things work between us.
Q. What was the first thing that went through your head when you first saw Eight Beaufort?
A. When I first saw him? Well, that was a bit of a jolt. But the second time I saw him was when he dove into the river, shirtless, and I remember thinking that even Mark would have given that beautiful body a near-perfect score—and Mark doesn’t believe in giving tens.
Q. I hear your family is dealing with a curse, what’s the story behind that?
A. To be honest, I’m still trying to figure out the curse. It doesn’t help that the story of how it came about—and exactly what it means—seems to change depending on which family is telling the story. My aunt Pru tells it all differently than my cousin Cassie, and the Beauforts have their own version. The only thing we all know for certain is that the curse can kill.
Q. What’s your favorite part of your aunt’s plantation?
A. That’s hard to answer because . . . spoilers. But I guess I wasn’t prepared for the way Watson’s Landing sucked me in. As a Watson, being here is my destiny, and I’m still exploring and trying to figure out the relationship and the various mysteries. How I feel about the planation ranges from frustration to outright rage to acceptance and delight. It’s hard to avoid spoilers here, but the bottom line—and my favorite part—is that I need Watson’s Landing as much as it needs me.
Q. Favorite color?
A. I’ve always loved purple, but I’m starting to have a thing for green.
Q. What are your hopes for the future?
A. Hope is frequently a Get Out Of Jail Card that leads to disappointment, so I try not to hope. But lately, a lot of what I can’t help hoping for seems to have an expiration date attached to it. I’ve lost so much already, but I’m working on learning to appreciate what I have while I have it, and I’m flinging myself at life as hard as I can, squeezing the most out of every moment.
Q. Favorite low country dish?
A. That’s a toss up between Aunt Pru’s Peanut Butter Whoopie Pie Cake and the Blue Dog at Bobby Joe’s Beach Dogs. Blue cheese slaw and sweet potato mustard. Who knew that would be a can’t-do-better-than-this combination? On the other hand, sharing it with Eight might have had a little something to do with what made it special.
Q. Best thing about living in South Carolina?
A. Family, tradition, and beautiful boys, moonlight that turns everything to diamond dust, and the magic that makes the hard things bearable.
Q. One thing you can’t live without.
A. Watson’s Landing. Literally.
Martina Boone was born in Prague and spoke several languages before learning English. Her first teacher in the U.S. made fun of her for not pronouncing the “wh” sound right, so she set out to master “all the words”—she’s still working on that! In the meantime, she’s writing contemporary fantasy set in the kinds of magical places she’d love to visit. If you like romance steeped in mystery, mayhem, Spanish moss, and a bit of magic, she hopes you’ll look forward to meeting Barrie, Eight, Cassie, Pru, Seven and the other characters of Watson Island.
