#BIR2013 @BestIveRead: Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers

Dark Triumph is the second book in the His Fair Assassins Trilogy.  I really enjoyed the first book, Grave Mercy, so I was super excited for Dark Triumph and was not disappointed.  This book is darker, edgier and I loved every second of it.

Title: Dark Triumph
Author: Robin LaFevers
Published: April 2013 by Houghton Mifflin Books for Children

When Sybella arrived at the doorstep of St Mortain half mad with grief and despair the convent were only too happy to offer her refuge – but at a price. The sisters of this convent serve Death, and with Sybella naturally skilled in both the arts of death and seduction, she could become one of their most dangerous weapons.

But her assassin’s skills are little comfort when the convent returns her to the life that nearly drove her mad. Her father’s rage and brutality are terrifying, and her brother’s love is equally monstrous. But when Sybella discovers an unexpected ally she discovers that a daughter of Death may find something other than vengeance to live for…

I think my favorite thing about this series is that each book is told from a different girls point of view, but yet the story arch is cohesive and we get to see more of the world as we go.

Robin LaFevers has created an amazing story about three girls who are the daughters of St. Mortain, a religious order that serves the Saint as assassins.  Each girl is dealing with some pretty crazy stuff that has happened in the past before they went to the convent and now are pivotal figures in the “history” (think Jack and Rose on the Titanic, the history is all real, but the girls are all Robin) of Brittany and it’s court.

In Dark Triumph, Sybella gets to tell her story of being the “daughter” of high ranking court member and how she goes about dealing with her family and the darker aspects of her life while still trying to carry about the plans set for her by the order of St. Mortain.  The story is full of action, mystery and heart that will leave you DYING for book 3, Mortal Heart, Annith’s story, that should be out in 2014.

  1. I've had this on my shelf FOREVER I really have to read it soon! Everyone's saying it's so much better than Grave Mercy and I really liked that one, so it can only get better, right?

  2. Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers looks like a mystery with a twist. Who would suspect a convent to house a murderer? My favorite book in 2013 is Thunder Dog by Michael Hingson with Susy Flory. The reason is because of the anniversary of 9/11 each year and learning more about individuals who lived through the tragedy. In his book Michael's guide dog, Rosalle, leads him down the dark and smoke-filled stairs. Along the way, others join him and we as readers, count the stairs with him as he goes 9 steps, a landing, then turn and 10 steps, repeat.
