#BIR2011 – Shine by Lauren Myracle

Posted December 11, 2011 by Pixie in Blog, Uncategorized / 9 Comments

When her best guy friend falls victim to a vicious hate crime, sixteen-year-old Cat sets out to discover who in her small town did it. Richly atmospheric, this daring mystery mines the secrets of a tightly knit Southern community and examines the strength of will it takes to go against everyone you know in the name of justice.

Against a backdrop of poverty, clannishness, drugs, and intolerance, Myracle has crafted a harrowing coming-of-age tale couched in a deeply intelligent mystery. Smart, fearless, and compassionate, this is an unforgettable work from a beloved author.

I chose Shine by Lauren Myracle as one of my favorite books this year because it’s one those stories, that takes you to dark place and leads you into the light. With an emotionally charged story-line Lauren Myracle will take you on raw, gritty journey to discover the truth behind a hate crime and more. I was expecting Shine to just be a mystery about solving a hate crime, it wasn’t. Solving Patrick’s attack is more of a sub plot, the main story is about Cat facing her fears, reliving her past and learning to live again. The love she has for Patrick pushes her beyond her comfort zone and helps heal her wounds. Cat’s journey will lead her into some shady places, it all revolves around abuse, molestation, violence, homophobia & drugs.
