Q & A with Alyxandra Harvey

I forget how I found the Drake Chronicles books, I don’t remember if we got Hearts at Stake randomly from Bloomsbury or if we asked for it, but either way I’m TOTALLY happy that I found these books (Hearts at Stake & Blood Feud).  They are fun and fresh and I’ve enjoyed every minute I’ve spent with Lucy and the Drakes (and I, like many others, think Lucy and Nicholas need more air time, but I digress hehe).

I’ve wanted to feature these books for a while, and the stars have finally aligned!  With the upcoming release of Out for Blood, book 3 in the Drake Chronicles, this winter, we thought what a perfect time to get to know Alyx, the Drakes and spread the Drake Chronicles love (and Alyx is also a contributor to The Visitor’s Guide to Mystic Falls).  To learn more about Alyxandra Harvey, you can check out her web page, or follow her on Twitter.

Can you give us a couple non spoilerly facts about each of the main characters, Lucy, Nicholas, Solange, Kieran, Logan and Isabeau, so far?

  • Lucy~ has surprising choices to make.
  • Solange~ is darker than she thinks.
  • Nicholas~ will do whatever it takes to save Solange…and Lucy.
  • Kieran~ knows more than you think.
  • Logan~ is tougher than he looks.
  • Isabeau~ is softer than she looks.

I enjoyed getting to know Isabeau in Blood Feud. What research did you do to write about her history in France and her life as a Hound?
I went to a French high school and we actually had a French Revolution bicentennial festival in 1989 when I was in grade 9…so you can see I never had a chance to be normal. 😉
More recently, I read books on the French Revolution, on the period in general and Marie-Antoinette, as well as watching a few period-movies to get some rich visuals. And I did visit Versailles but that was twenty years ago!

Each one of the Drake Brothers is so different from the next. How do you contain all those HUGE personalities when they are together in a scene? Is there one that’s been more difficult to write than the rest? Is there one that you’re excited for us to meet in a future book?
My favourite Drake brother tends to be whoever I’m writing about at the moment. I do have a soft spot for Nicholas though and I get the most mail about him…but other than that they definitely have minds of their own…sometimes I think I’m just along for dictation. 😉

Out for Blood is the next in the series. I believe it’s about Quinn and Hunter – can you give us a 3 word introduction to or description for each of them?

  • Quinn: charming, hot, wicked
  • Hunter: competent, smart, brave

Your characters have some unique names, where do you get them from and how do you go about the process of naming them? Also, how do you say Solange and Isabeau’s names?
I collect names. I keep lists in notebooks and I steal recklessly from movie credits. I also have lots of baby name books.
And it’s roughly: Solange ~ “Soh-lawn-j” and Isabeau ~ “Ee-zah-boh”

I like how different your vampire books are from many that are out there right now. You’ve created a history and gave them a structure like an old world kingdom. What was important to you when you started writing this series? What did you want to make sure was included and what you wanted to leave out so that you would be taking a different path?
Thank you!
Let’s face it, there’s an embarrassment of riches when it comes to vampire books nowadays, and I love that. But it also makes it even more important for your own mythology to stand out. Luckily, that’s not something you have to work at.  If you write the story that wants to be written, I firmly believe it will be unique because every writer is unique and so is every reader.

That said, I really enjoy history so using vampires opened doors for me to play with costumes and societal structures. People are contradictory creatures of habit and revolution…no reason to think that stops when your food choices change. 😉  It was also important for me not to lose that slightly tongue-in-cheek flavour. Just because you’re the undead, doesn’t mean you’ve lost your sense of humour!

Are there any similarities between you and any of your characters?
I’m probably most like Lucy’s mom who you won’t see very much until Book 4. And I guess I’m quiet like Solange but snarky like Lucy.

What has been the coolest thing that’s happened to you since becoming a published author?
Holding my book in my hands is still awe-inspiring to me! And I am flattered and touched that readers take the time to make book trailers and artwork for the Drake Chronicles.

And now to the sharing

  1. OH wow, I can't wait for Out of Blood (Quinn=hot=me screaming) I never knew that that was how you pronounced the names! I thought it was "So-lawn-ge" and "Iz-a-beyoo" Wow!
I really enjoyed reading all of these, and Alyxandra? Normal is overrated ^_^

  2. Wow, I'm jealous that she used to go to school in France! 🙂 She looks so much younger than she really is. 😛

I do what she does: steal names from movie credits! Sometimes it's hard not to! xD I personally love the name Isabeau, Kieran, and Solange. 🙂

I've never read this series, but I saw Alyxandra's LJ and I wanted to read them after that, but I haven't seen them in my local B&N. Thank you for the giveaway and the opportunity to win! 🙂

  3. I found this series accidentally. I stumbled upon it at the library and decided to pick it up. I fell in love with Alyx's mythology and story telling and it's my favorite vampire series. I cannot wait for more!
