12 x 12 Reading Challenge!

Posted May 2, 2010 by Stacey in Uncategorized / 17 Comments

Hey all, we’re encouraging you all to pick up something new in May!  The 12 by 12 is a fun thing to encourage people to pick up and finish at least 1 new novel in each month.  If you normally read non-fiction – try a novel.  If you normally read just YA try MG or Adult fiction or a Sci-Fi or a Mystery.  Try something new and fun, or just grab that 2nd book that you were hemming and hawing about if you should our shouldn’t GRAB IT!
Where it came from:
The idea behind this 12 by 12 Reading Challenge came from two bloggers,Pizza’s Book Discussion in 2009 and FOMA’s National Just Read More Novel’s Month 2010. There will be twelve book bloggers, each hosting their own Just Read More Novel’s Month throughout 2010.

Participants can join in one, two, or all twelve of these separate reading challenges. Each month starts a brand new reading challenge. And the goal? To simply read more novels. Each of us will follow the guidelines set for January’s NaJuReMoNoMo.

The rules are whatever you want to make of them, but here are the guidelines the creator of NaJuReMoNoMo goes by:

1. Must Be A Novel. Works of fiction only, please. Memoirs, non-fiction, how-to books, and Garfield collections don’t count.

2. Memoirs Aren’t Novels. No matter how made up the story, anything ostensibly true isn’t a novel. Also known as The James Frey Rule.

3. Start and Finish a new novel in May

4. Re-reading Doesn’t Count. Try something new. Read something by your favorite author or try an entirely new author or tackle that novel you have always wanted to read.

5. Have Fun. Nobody is grading you or paying you or judging you. Read what you like and like what you read.

  2. stacey- so I bought that book, and have already finished it! I was so engrossed that I had to take it to work with me!! It's called Faith of our Fathers by N.C. Allen. I loved every part of it. It turns out that it's part of a series, so I bought the rest of the books to read! LOL 🙂

  3. I'm participating. I hope to read ten novels. I've already finished one,The Silver Blade by Sally Gardner and I'm close to the end of a second one, Bleeding Violet by Dia Reeves.

  5. Btw… this is an awesome initiative! Reading should be promoted EVERYWHERE (and even if it wasn't promoted, people should read TONS!)

    Reading rocks ;)!

  6. I'm in too! I've missed reading after a year of fanfiction in the twi zone so BOOKS ARE WIN!

Question.. its April lol Is the contest still on?

BUT anyway, I'm reading at least 4 this month, I'm making headway in The Gathering by Anne Enright and I've got Kristin Cashore's Fire and Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard to get through.

Oooh, awesome contest ! I have been participating every month tooo ! I've actually trying to get to the goal of 100 books this year. I'm only on 30, so this may take a while…

This month, I finished the Immortals Series by Tamore Pierce. Although I didn't exactly love the person the main girl ended up with, the story was really good !

  8. I stopped by on May 1 and the sign-up post hadn't been posted yet. But I went on with my challenge this month to read 10 novels. As of last night, I completed the 11th novel of May, so I've met my goal. I had, however, intended to read one novel by Anthony Trollope as well as The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan, and I didn't even start either one of those. I'm working on my summary and will be posting it on my blog at Reading in Texas.
